8 Body Image Boosting Tricks Every Parent Should Know
The statistics about body image issues in kids is alarming.... in the US, 46% of 9-11 year-olds report they’re sometimes/often on a diet, and 78% of 17-year-old girls are unhappy with their bodies.
What can we parents do to keep our kids from being a part of that statistic?
(Especially if we haven't quite mastered the whole body image issue ourselves?)
Rachael Soster-Smith, an anthropologist mom from our community was faced with this issue in her family and has 8 incredibly practical tips that helped her turn the ship around. She also shares 8 tiny challenges for us to try in our own families too. As a mom of a highschooler, we're in the thick of this and this is exactly what I needed today! Sheila is a stay-at-home mom to 4 boys. Back in 2012 when her youngest was still a baby and all 4 boys were still under 5, Sheila found herself “losing it” way too often and yelling a whole lot more than she cared for.
So she committed to going 365 days straight without yelling and called it The Orange Rhino Challenge. It took her several attempts, but eventually she made it. Her personal record is going 520 days straight without yelling!
